A full week of events commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr.’s contributions

Officially, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated on January 16 this year, but Atlanta’s MLK Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change has a full week of events planned – beginning tomorrow, Saturday, January 7. 

So you can plan ahead and not miss anything, here are the details.   And so that all of us can learn from and remember the impact MLK Jr. had on the city of Atlanta and the world, most of the week’s events are free of charge. 

Highlights include:

Saturday, January 7, 9:00am – 4:00pm, The King Center (449 Auburn Ave. 30312 – about ½ mile from the Pencil Factory Flats & Shops) – Health Fest and King Youth Empowerment Summit consisting of a 2.6 mile youth run/walk, free health screenings, an expo featuring Atlanta’s young leaders, and a panel discussion regarding youth violence prevention.

Sunday, January 8, 7:30pm – 9:30pm, King Center Auditorium – Free screening of “A.D. King: Brother to the Dreamer: Behold the Dream,” a film discussing King’s contributions to society.

Tuesday, January 10, 2:00pm – 3:30pm, King Center Screening Room – The Humane Society of the United States will host a discussion on animal cruelty.

Thursday, January 12, 8:00pm, Atlanta Symphony Hall - “A King Celebration” tribute concert with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra  –  featuring cellist, Yo-Yo Ma and the Morehouse and Spelman College Glee Clubs.  Tickets $55-$125

Friday, January 13, 11:00am - 4:00pm, MLK Jr. Gymnasium – The King Center, in partnership with several community organizations and businesses, will hold a Job Readiness Symposium.   Participants will learn about money management, interview skills and resume writing.

The week’s events culminate with a commemorative service, march and rally on Monday, January 16. Additionally on that day, and at various locations throughout Atlanta, you can participate in the MLK Jr. Day of Service.  Join members of the Atlanta community to participate in service projects around the city.  Projects range from food preparation, painting, building and gardening.  There really is something for everyone, so register for a projectand get out there!
