Atlanta Beltline Additions: Join the Conversation!
Over at Creative Loafing, a lively debate is springing up around one of our favorite topics, the Beltline. With the proposal of a one-cent sales tax intended to revitalize Atlanta transit if passed by voters next year, Beltline officials are working on plans in order to hopefully get a piece of that prospective pie.
To improve their chances, project planners have made the radical decision to veer from the Beltline's familiar leaf-shaped loop and propose a transit spur into Midtown and downtown. The move drastically changes the Beltline's reach — and just might impress state and elected officials who will decide which transportation projects receive funding from the tax.
A number of different transit concepts are on the drawing table, from quite a few proposed connections to the downtown Atlanta streetcar system to light rail that will connect Georgia Tech to Southern Atlanta. If you check out the in-depth post at the Loaf, you'll see the proposed new Beltline segments. The story includes information on conversational, community-oriented planning meetings wherein you can get your voice heard.
Why is this important for us? The Beltline is a slow-growing project, but our sources say that it's now possible to safely and comfortably ride a bike from Piedmont Park to Grant Park...it's the heart of the city that will be affected first! On March 14, the meeting in our part of the city occurs just a few blocks from the Pencil Factory Flats & Shops. The Beltline can be our project. Go join the conversation!
Where would you like to see changes made to the Beltline proposal?
