Atlanta Intown Happenings – Thanksgiving Holiday Edition

 

Your family is on their way to town.   Thanksgiving dinner is covered, but what about the other FOUR DAYS they are here???  Fortunately, we’ve done the research for you and found some great events happening around Intown Atlanta over the holiday week.   So take a load off and get out there!

·         The Outdoor Ice Skating Rink at Centennial Olympic Park opens Saturday, November 19!  For just $7 per person (plus $2 if you want to rent skates), you and your family can skate for 90 minutes and take in the beautiful view of downtown Atlanta. 

·         Rock Away Hunger– If you want to give back to the community and have fun doing it, this is the event for you.   The Hard Rock Caféis hosting a live music benefit concert for the Atlanta Community Food Bankon Sunday, November 20th at 9:00 p.m.   Tickets are available in advance and at the door – and you’ll receive a discount by bringing non-perishable food items to donate. 

·         Hosea Feed the Hungry and Homeless– One of Atlanta’s most well-known charitable Thanksgiving events will take place on Thanksgiving Day, November 24, at the Georgia World Congress Center.    There are volunteer opportunities to help with the event set up (tables, chairs, etc.), assist with food preparation, help with guest registration and more.  Volunteer work takes place in shifts the day before Thanksgiving, November 23as well as on Thanksgiving Day, November 24.

·         Thanksgiving Day Atlanta Half Marathon– As discussed in a previous post, it’s a great way to earn your dinner.

·         Urban Picnic at Sweet Auburn Curb Market– Friday, November 25 (and every Friday).  Does the mere thought of leftovers leave you longing for something, ANYTHING different?  Bring your family to this weekly event where they will enjoy lunch from some of Atlanta’s best food trucks, aspiring food vendors and the market’s own eateries.   

·         The GA Tech/UGA game time has been set for 12:00 noon on Saturday, November 26.    If you’re looking for a great place to watch, we recommend Hill Street Tavernat the Pencil Factory Flats and Shops.

·         The Auburn Avenue Research Library has several exhibits your family will enjoy.  Here are two we thought looked interesting – and both end Dec.4

  •  Georgia Through My Lens - Dennis A. Robinson’s photographic exhibition captures Georgia’s humanity and beauty. 
  • Not Your Grandmother’s Quilt– The Brown Sugar Stitchers, a group of predominantly African American Quilters from metro Atlanta, display their craftsmanship in honor of National Family History Month. 

·         Eat a Georgia RainbowKids got cabin fever?   Pack up the car and bring them to Imagine It!  The Children’s Museum of Atlantafor this interactive opportunity to learn about the importance of eating locally grown produce.  The event runs every Sunday through December 31.
