Don’t think of Atlanta as a theater city?  Think again.

Over the past couple of days, I’ve been seeing lots of Facebook activity about the plays and other live theater events happening in Atlanta… and so we have today’s post.  No, people don’t necessarily flock to Atlanta for the theater (or theatre if you’re fancy) scene like they do to New York City, but I gotta say, we are holding our own these days.  Here’s a list of the shows running right now.   There’s something for everyone and it's looking like an indoor weekend, so as my grandma used to say, “Go get yourself some culture!”

"Annie" at the Fox Theatre- Our list starts off with one of my favorites - a true classic about an orphan girl who dreams for and ultimately finds a family of her own.    I know the words to just about every song in this fantastic, feel-good musical.  Be glad this is not a video post.   “Annie” is playing at the Fox Theatre through this Sunday, January 22, so get your tickets now!

"Avenue Q" at Horizon Theatre– We posted about this show last week and since then, the tickets have been selling like hotcakes.   Unlike "Annie," this show is not for kids.  I urge you to get tickets and prepare to laugh ‘til it hurts.

Improv at the Village Theatre– Catch “Family Feud” on Friday or “Improv A** Hole!” Saturday – both at 8:30, both for just $10.  Only a handful of shows left in the “old” space before the theatre moves to the Pencil Factory Flats & Shopsnext to Caramba Café.

Agatha’s: A Taste of Mystery - Agatha’s has been putting on comedy and murder mystery dinner theater nightly in Atlanta since 1988. You’ll enjoy a five-course meal along with a hilarious show for $65 (wine, coffee, tea, tax and tip included).  As for the current show, well, it’s “Jerseylicious” meets Jeckyll Island, Georgia in – wait for it – “Jeckyllicious.”   Audience participation is encouraged, so channel your inner Snooky and head on over.

"Red" at Theatrical Outfit - If you’re looking for a more serious theater experience, and certainly if you’re interested in art history, check out “Red” at Theatrical Outfit.   The Tony Award Winning play explores the life and work of artist Mark Rothko.  Shows start February 1.

"God of Carnage" at the Alliance Theatre – We’ve heard great things about this thought-provoking play starring Jasmine Guy.  Another Tony Award winner, this one follows two sets of parents as they deal with the fallout from their kids’ playground fight – and end up behaving like children themselves.  The show was recently extended to run through February 4.

Enjoy your weekend!
