The Intown Brief: Downtown Atlanta News Shorts

It’s time once again for us to provide a round-up of the biggest news and events happening around downtown Atlanta, Grant Park, the Old Fourth Ward, Inman Park, Candler Park, Reynoldstown, Cabbagetown, Sweet Auburn, Edgewood, and the rest of intown:

  • It just got real. Chef Paul Luna (of downtown Atlanta restaurant Lunacy Black Market) filed a petition last week claiming that the often-reviled PARKatlanta is in violation of the city’s parking ordinance and the city charter. Luna has been a vocal opponent of PARKatlanta and its ramifications on intown businesses for some time now, and it looks like he’s leading the resistance against the organization that has changed the way Atlantans park. What do you think about PARKatlanta? Sound off in the comments!
  • According to the Highland Walk Facebook page, P’Cheen now offers poolside delivery. Poolside delivery in the Inman Park/Old Fourth Ward area? Oh my. Please invite us to any/all pool parties catered by P’Cheen. Thanks.
  • Last Monday the city approved the renaming of Harris Street after architect John Portman. Drama before, during, and after. Surprise, surprise. The city has renamed quite a few streets, particularly in the older intown areas, making it difficult for both tourists and natives alike to figure out where the heck they’re going. (For those of you who don’t know, Portman was the man responsible for the “gerbil tube” style of some of the downtown Atlanta hotels, made famous at Dragon*Con parties).
  • Art on the Atlanta BeltLine has kicked off to an fantastic start! The project allows artists to “showcase dynamic installations and performances on the Atlanta BeltLine corridor.” Kyle Brooks is one of the first artists. Check out his super-cute mural “The Beltline Bears” at Creative Loafing. What a fun way to spruce up a boring concrete wall! More fun stuff like this, please, Atlanta!
  • Popular food truck purveyors Yumbii and Sweet Auburn BBQ are opening up in the Sweet Auburn Curb Market, likely in accordance with a city requirement that street food vendors operate out of a brick and mortar location. Regardless, awesome. And delicious.
