Get Your Feast on at the Cooking School at Irwin Street

There are two kind of cooks in the world, right?

  • the kind who makes elaborate, five-course meals with fancy French names, paired with exquisite wines and served impeccably, making you wonder if said cook is an android.
  • the kind who tosses some cereal in a bowl with some milk and considers it cuisine, or, worse, who manages to set him or herself on fire as soon as anything more complex than the microwave gets involved.

No, of course not. Most of us tend to fall somewhere in between, and, coincidentally, so do some of the best meals. It is in this spirit of casual, fun, and delicious home cooking that The Cooking School at Irwin Street offers its classes. Nestled in the heart of the Old Fourth Ward, the school teaches intown locals everything from basic kitchen skills to elaborate cuisine, all in a cozy and welcoming environment.

The school will even take suggestions for specific custom classes if you'd like to book a group: everything from gluten-free baking to making homemade pasta!

This February, there were classes on Ethiopian cooking, biscuits 101, BBQ tips, and an aphrodisiac menu for Valentine's Day, as well as many others. This March, classes include vegan Italian cuisine, Latin-Caribbean fusion, chocolate truffle making, cake decorating, and homemade beauty products. Many classes are already sold out, so check the calendar for details! You can also join them on Facebook for up-to-the-minute class openings.

So whether you want to impress your friend, your mom, or that special someone, or you just want to eat something that didn't come out of a box, head on down to the Old Fourth Ward's latest spot for aspiring chefs and get your hands dirty. After all, we're not called the "sparkling-clean" South.
