Intown Brief: Downtown Atlanta News Shorts

It’s time once again for our sporadic round-up of the all the news and events happening around downtown Atlanta, Grant Park, the Old Fourth Ward, Reynoldstown, Cabbagetown, and the rest of intown:

  • Oakland Cemetery (a.k.a. the coolest tourist spot in town) is open for tour season again. Tours focus on the Victorian-era gardens, architecture, and art that make Oakland special, as well as Victorian funeral customs and history. They also visit the final resting places of Gone With the Wind author Margaret Mitchell, golfer Bobby Jones, and Maynard Jackson, Atlanta’s first black mayor. Tours run Saturdays and Sundays beginning at 10 AM, 2 PM, and 4 PM. There are also twilight tours beginning at 6:30 PM. All tours leave from the Visitors Center; for pricing visit Historic Oakland Cemetery. Mere steps from thePencil Factory Flats & Shops!
  • Caramba Cafe will be open and happening for Cinco de Mayo. Mia wants you to come eat and drink in honor of Mexico with her and the rest of the crew. Don't deny Mia!
  • Recently, a "Burning of Atlanta" marker was placed downtown in order to commemorate General William T. Sherman's legendary act of setting the city on fire. Of course, this was accompanied by plenty of controversy. Members of the NAACP have spoken out against the decision, saying that the marker glorifies the Civil War and serves as a painful reminder of slavery. There are currently discussions underway about possibly moving the marker. It's a hard call. What do you think?
  • It's springtime, and the birds and the bees are in full force. Zoo Atlanta reports that one of their gorillas and one of their orangutans are expecting! Kudzoo, the lowland gorilla, is expected to give birth to her infant in the next month. This baby will be the grandchild of Atlanta's thoroughly-missed legendary silverback Willie B. Additionally, Blaze the Sumatran orangutan is due to have her baby in November or December. Exciting...we can't wait for the pictures!
