Review: Deliciousness at Daddy D’z BBQ Joint

Barbecue is a contentious subject, with the various schools defending their own particular style as the One True ‘Cue. At ATL Intown Living, though, we’re lovers, not fighters, and we appreciate each and every kind of barbecue as its own wonderful, unique gift to the world.

So it was with great pleasure that today for lunch we walked the two short blocks from the Pencil Factory Flats down to Daddy D’z BBQ Joint (264 Memorial Drive). Daddy D’z is an intown institution, serving no-frills ‘cue to the Grant Park, Downtown, Cabbagetown, Old Forth Ward, and East Atlanta areas for years.

Daddy D’z looks like an eatery of its particular stripe should. Its exterior, though perhaps unglamorous, nonetheless brings you in with murals of jazz musicians and the adorable little metal pig on the roof. Past the front door, there is an enclosed patio and cozy, simple tables and booths on the interior of the building. Police officers and EMS workers wait to get their food to go, and Atlantans of all ages and backgrounds sit with plates of rich-smelling barbecue and mouth-watering sides.

The friendly server took my order as soon as I was prepared: a small rib plate with the spicy barbecue sauce, collard greens, corn on the cob, and cornbread, and a Yuengling out of the cooler. The ribs were tender and smoky, and the sauce was just spicy enough with the right amount of sweet. The greens were obviously made fresh, cooked all day with some smoked pork, and the corn was fresh and juicy. And you can’t go wrong with cornbread and a cold beer on a hot day! The plate only looked this tidy for a very brief time, I can promise.

One of the best things about being intown is having access to all of these jewels of the city. Great food and lots of fun is just a few blocks away!
