Springtime in Athens
Spring break may have ended but there is still more than enough to do in Athens to distract one from their studies. March and April are packed full of sporting, philanthropy, and arts events throughout Athens and the University. We have compiled a list of our favorites but don’t be fooled- this is just the beginning of what Athens has to offer in the spring time.
Athens Music Collective Showcase- (March 19) An incredible concert at the 40 Watt that includes 9 bands and 30 musicians including: Betsy Franck & the Bareknuckle Band, Boo Ray & the Bad Beat Kings, Bros. UGA Baseball vs. Auburn Tigers- (March 19-21) Support the Georgia Diamond Dawgs at Foley Field as they take on the hated Auburn Tigers in what is guaranteed to be a great game. www.georgiadogs.com
Terrapin Breast Fest- (March 20) A five-hour event benefitting the St. Mary’s Women’s Diagnostic Center featuring live music from local musicians, food, beer tasting, brewery tours and a silent auction. http://www.terrapinbeer.com/announcements
Tri Delta Sorority’s Annual Pancake Supper- (March 23) Feast on homemade pancakes at this all-you-can eat event that benefits St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Tickets are available from any chapter member. www.ugatridelta.com
The Robert Osbourne Classic Film Festival- (March 25-28) Robert Osborne, the primetime host of Turner Classic Movies and a columnist for The Hollywood Reporter, has picked nine classic films that he says, “represent the breadth and variety of classic cinema from the 1920s to the 1980s.” The 2010 festival selections are: To Catch a Thief, Double Indemnity, Stand by Me, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Shining, Steamboat Bill Jr., All About Eve, The Godfather II, and The Wizard of Oz. UGA Relay For Life- (April 23-24) Currently the largest college Relay in the country, UGA Relay For Life is an overnight event that raises money for the American Cancer Society. As the first college Relay, the University of Georgia has consistently grown over the past 10 years to become one of the largest philanthropic events held at UGA. www.ugarelay.org
Twilight-(April 23-25) The 30th annual professional cycling event and festival that runs through Downtown Athens. The weekend is filled with music, competition, and fun for all as the bikers compete in America’s best criterium. http://www.athenstwilight.com/
