This heat wave has been wretched, hasn’t it?

No matter where you live in the city, everyone in Atlanta is looking for a way to beat the heat. If you have central air conditioning, lucky you! Central air is especially common in newer luxury apartments, to the point where it's considered just as crucial as running water for comfortable apartment living here in the ATL. But even those of us with the deepest of pockets don't want to spend our whole paycheck in utility bills just to keep comfortable, so here are a few useful tricks for keeping your apartment cool this summer without resorting to the thermostat.

  • Keep your shades, blinds, or curtains down on eastward-facing windows in the morning and westward-facing windows in the evening. Even better, purchase some heat-blocking curtains with thermal lining, like these from Target, which will do extra duty in keeping the heat out.
  • As soon as the sun sets and the temperature cools in the evening, consider opening a window and placing a fan on a table in front of it. This will help draw in the cool outside air and offer a nice breeze.
  • Something that you might not have considered: since Atlanta's heat is tied intimately with our lovely humidity, many people find that buying an inexpensive dehumidifier can make an apartment drastically more comfortable.

Of course, you can always just go for a dip, if you're lucky enough to live in a downtown Atlanta apartment with a pool. Pencil Factory's resort-style pool is always a draw during the summertime, and who wouldn't want to relax in the shade in one of our poolside cabanas with a cold beverage before going for a swim? Anyway, we hope you can stay cool without breaking the bank this summer. If all else fails, take a cold shower. Take care!
