Tips for Keeping your Apartment Warm and Conserving Energy this Winter

Atlanta’s  first “snow alert” has officially arrived.  Ok, so it’s for extreme north Georgia, but the local news stations are abuzz and it does seem that winter has come to Atlanta.  So even if you don’t go stock up on bread and milk just yet, here are some steps you can take to keep your apartment warm tomorrow and all winter long – and save on your energy bills as a result.

  • Keep your windows and doors closed – and check for any areas that might be letting your cozy warm air out and that bitter cold air in.  If you find any leaks, ask your property manager about helping you seal them.   You can also use towels to block drafts.
  • Use window coverings to further insulate your apartment from the cold outside air.  They will also add to your apartment's decor.
  • Close vents in infrequently used rooms so the heat flow concentrates in the spaces you use most.   Close the doors to the unused rooms as well.
  • Clean or replace your furnace filter.  Dirty filters cause the furnace to work harder and increase heating costs.
  • Use a humidifier – it makes the air feel warmer and keeps your skin from feeling dry.
  • Add a blanket to your bed.
  • Use rugs on bare floors for extra insulation.
  • Bake some cookies.   The heat from the oven will keep the kitchen warm – and everybody likes cookies!
  • Cuddle up in sweatshirts, thick socks, hats and blankets (or bust out your Snuggie – we know you have one.)
  • If you need to warm up from the inside out, stop by Marlee’s Coffee and Tea Housein the Pencil Factory Flats and Shopsfor a hot beverage!

Remember, always get permission from your property manager or landlord before installing or modifying anything in your apartment.

Enjoy the season!
